In my opinion, websites have truly become a work of art over the last decade. There are so many options available today, that were not available in the past, because of the advancement in web technology. Today I will explore a few different layouts, and highlight the websites that utilize them efficiently. Let’s get started:

HORIZONTALLY CENTERED

The most popular layout, utilizing horizontally centered content.

LEFT JUSTIFIED

A different type of layout, utilizing left justified content.

RESPONSIVE

This layout is on the rise due to an increase in mobile devices and tablets. It intelligently adjusts based on the size
of the browser.

FULL SCREEN

Another layout gaining popularity due to larger monitors.

SINGLE PAGE SCROLL

An interesting approach to keeping all of the content on a single page.

HORIZONTAL SCROLL WITH PARALLAX

Parallax technology allows for elements to move at different speeds on separate layers.

There are numerous website layouts that have not been showcased here, but this list will give you a good idea of what options are out there. Be sure to check out my News Bulletin for more helpful articles.

Today I will outline the process I use to design a website. I’ve broken it down into 5 simple steps that will be easy to digest and understand. Everyone has their own unique process, and by no means do I feel that it’s my way or the highway. Take what you want from it, and hopefully you will learn a thing or two. Let’s get started:

1. DO YOUR RESEARCH

The most effective web marketing is having a website that is useful, simple and fast. What is the primary purpose of the website? Put yourself in the shoes of a visitor to your site, and think about the most efficient and convenient way you would want to get to your destination. Some sites focus on conversion, adding a large colorful contact form above the fold line. Other websites seek to feature specific products or services by showcasing them with a Hero Shot. Find out everything you can about the company before you start designing. What are their values? What is their demographic? What makes them unique? How can their product/services benefit consumers? The list goes on, but if you can answer these few questions you will have a strong foundation to build upon.

2. CREATE A WIREFRAME

I have found this step in the process to be extremely helpful. A wireframe is used specifically for layout purposes, and helps you establish a hierarchy to your website. Think about what items you want to emphasize, and how you are going to draw attention to them. A wireframe can be as simple as using boxes with labels to signify what goes in that area. Below is a simple wireframe you can use as an example:

3. CREATE A COLOR PALETTE

Colors are very important to a website, having a strong color palette will really make your site shine. Consider the mood you want to set when visitors come to your site, and how the colors will compliment the content. Establish specific colors that you will use for: Headings, copy text, and links. I have found that Adobe’s Kuler website has an excellent selection of professional color palettes to work from. I’ve also listed a few of my favorites below:

4. ESTABLISH YOUR FONT FAMILIES

With the introduction of @font-face to CSS3, we now have access to using almost any commercial font we want on a website. Much like the color palette, fonts can also set the mood for a website. I typically use only 2-3 font families for a website. I recommend selecting one “unique” font for all of your headings, and one “copy” font for all of your body text. Make sure that whatever fonts you decide to use are legible and have enough contrast from their background. Refer to my article on “15 Great Fonts for Professional Design” for a list of professional fonts that I like to use.

5. START CREATING

If you have followed the 4 previous steps, you will have a better idea of what direction you are going to take the website. As I said before, I encourage you to always think of the consumer first. Make your site exciting, enjoyable, and easy to use. I have found that using high-quality photographs will also add a nice touch to your website. I realize that we aren’t all be professional photographers, but stock photography sites like photodune and istockphoto offer great stock photo selections.

I hope this article will help better prepare you for your next design project, be sure to check out my News Bulletin for more helpful articles.
